NJCAA Region 8 Notebook: November 15

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 15, 2022) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Men's and Women's Basketball.


November 14, 2022 Coaches' Polls

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (for events November 7-13)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Josue Grullon, Daytona State
  • Region 8 Women's Basketball Player of the Week: Ashley Baez, Chipola

All Player of the Week honorees will be considered for NJCAA Player of the Week honors, which will be announced Wednesday.

Sports Updates

  • Cross Country: The NJCAA Cross Country Championships took place at Tallahassee's Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday. Pasco-Hernando State College (DII) and Eastern Florida State College (DI) were the top finishing women's teams while Daytona State College (DII) and Eastern Florida State (DI) were tops in the men's races. Teams are running in today's half marathon, held along Miller Landing Road on Tallahassee's north side.
  • Volleyball: FCSAA Division I Champion Florida SouthWestern State College earned the top seed at the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championships in West Plains, Mo., while Miami Dade College earned the six seed in the 16-team bracket. In the Division II tournament, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, FCSAA Division II Champion Gulf Coast State College is seeded 13th.
  • Men's Soccer: For the first time, Eastern Florida State College is the site of the NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championships, and Region 8 Champion Daytona State College drew the number one seed in the field. The Falcons won their opening game of pool play, 3-2 vs. Montgomery College. The Falcons close Pool Play at 10 a.m. Tuesday vs. Cowley (Kan.) College.
  • Women's Soccer: No. 4 seed Polk State College dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Iowa Western Community College in the opening round of Pool Play at the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships in Evans, Ga. The loss, combined with Iowa Western's 3-1 win over Seminole (Okla.) State College on Monday eliminated the Eagles from advancing out of Pool Play. They will wrap up their season against Seminole State on Tuesday. Meanwhile, defending National Champion and No. 7 seed Eastern Florida State won its opening match on Monday, a resounding 4-0 win over Laramie County (Wyom.) Community College, and will play Hill (Texas) College on Tuesday for the right to advance to the semifinals.
