Pasco-Hernando, Daytona State claim top ten finishes at NJCAAs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 12, 2022) - Apalachee Regional Park hosted its first NJCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, and nine of Region 8's 12 women's cross country teams were represented. 

Pasco-Hernando State College led Region 8 in the Division II team standings with 253 points, good for eighth place, one spot ahead of Daytona State College, who tallied 320 points.

The Bobcats were paced by Gabrielle Marshall who finished 29th overall with a 5K time of 20:34.5. 

Daytona State had the region's top individual finisher, as Shannon Jones, who won the FCSAA Championships two weeks earlier, finished fourth overall to earn NJCAA All-America honors. She posted a time of 19:27.4. Teammates Giovanna Meade (38th, 20:44.8) and Harleigh Crist (57th, 21:12.3) gave the Falcons a leg up in the head-to-head battle with Pasco-Hernando State but the Bobcats' three through five runners - Mia DeRhonda (59th, 21:13.6), Alexi Amer (64th, 21:17.9) and Maranda Hildebrand (72nd, 21:30.1) - all finished well ahead of the Falcons' fourth scorer to give Pasco the advantage. 

Florida Gateway College led a trio of teams in the second ten, finishing 11th. Florida State College at Jacksonville placed 17th and South Florida State College, 19th. The College of Central Florida, running in its first-ever NJCAA Championships finished 27th.

Pensacola State College participated but did not qualify for team scoring. 

In the Division I race, Eastern Florida State College, also making its NJCAA Championships debut, placed 19th with 488 points. The Titans were paced by Rachel Starr, who placed 72nd with a time of 21:08.7, tops among Region 8 runners. 

Seminole State College's Carly Holadia, who bested Starr at the Region 8 Championships on October 28, finished 92nd with a time of 21:47.5.

Lansing (Mich.) Community College won the Division II Championship while the College of Southern Idaho emerged as the Division I champs.
