TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 14, 2023) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Baseball, Softball, Women's Tennis & Beach Volleyball.

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (March 6-12)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Player of the Week: Wooyeoul Shin, Miami Dade
  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Carlos Nolasco, Miami Dade
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Player of the Week: D'Yani McKinley, Florida SouthWestern
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week: Sophie Abrams, Santa Fe
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Player of the Week: Chay Yeager, Pasco-Hernando State

Sports Updates

  • DI Men's Basketball: Northwest Florida State College won the FCSAA Championship and punched its ticket to Hutchinson, Kan., with an 89-85 win over Tallahassee Community College in Saturday's Championship Game. Despite the loss, Tallahassee and Chipola College earned at-large bids to the national tournament, which begins March 20.
  • DI Women's Basketball: Eastern Florida State College won its first-ever FCSAA Championship, knocking off Northwest Florida State, 48-43, snapping a 25-year run by the Panhandle Conference. The Titans earned the automatic bid to the national tournament in Lubbock, Texas, which begins March 22, as the No. 2 seed. Northwest Florida State and Gulf Coast State college earned at-large bids into the 24-team field.
  • DII Men's Basketball: Florida Gateway won its second straight South Atlantic District B Championship with a 101-77 win over Pitt (N.C.) Community College and will return to the national tournament in Danville, Ill., which begins March 21.
  • DII Women's Basketball: Palm Beach State College erased an early 27-4 deficit and led by five points late before falling to Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College, 77-75, in the South Atlantic District Quarterfinals. 
  • Flag Football: Florida Gateway traveled to Kansas for a doubleheader on both Friday and Saturday and returned home with four victories. The Timberwolves beat Pratt CC (60-0), Hesston College (40-6), Fort Scott CC (34-6) and Kansas Wesleyan (20-19 OT) to improve to 6-0.
  • Baseball: The NJCAA's first regular season Division II poll was released on Monday and Region 8 had two teams in the Top 20 - No. 7 St. Johns River State College and No. 16 Pasco-Hernando State College. Florida State College at Jacksonville received votes. In the Division I poll, Central Florida and Santa Fe are still Nos. 1 and 6, respectively, leading five Region 8 teams in the poll. Pensacola State College and Gulf Coast State are Nos. 12 and 13, respectively, and Miami Dade College made its first appearance of the season at No. 20.
  • Softball: Region 8 has four teams in the top ten of the NJCAA's Division I poll, led by No. 2 Northwest Florida State. Florida Southwestern State College, the College of Central Florida and Seminole State College are Nos. 3, 9 and 10, respectively. Indian River State College is No. 18 and Pensacola State received votes. In the Division II poll, Lake-Sumter State College is ranked for a second straight week at No. 17 and Pasco-Hernando State received votes.
