Florida Gateway cruises to return trip to Danville

LAKE CITY, Fla. (March 11, 2023) - Behind a 56-point second half, Florida Gateway College cruised to a 101-77 win over Pitt (N.C.) Community College in Saturday's NJCAA Division II South Atlantic District B Championship Game.

With the win, the Timberwolves earned a return trip to the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championships in Danville, Ill., March 21-25.

Saturday marked the first time Region 8 has hosted a Division II District Championship Game, and the host Timberwolves did their part to send the home crowd home happy. 

Both teams endured a slow start offensively - five minutes in, Pitt lead 8-4 - but by the halfway point of the first half, Florida Gateway had seized a 23-17 lead, and the Timberwolves never looked back. They led 45-35 at the break and gradually pulled away over the final 20 minutes. 

Florida Gateway led by as many as 34 (100-66) in the closing seconds, setting off a wild celebration in FGC's Howard Center. 

Four players scored in double-figures for the Timberwolves, led by Amayoaah Phillips' 21. Antewan Webber added 20. Eric Canavan posted 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Jeremiah Barze scored 10 points. 

Florida Gateway will learn its seed in the 16-team field and its opening round opponent during the Division II Selection Show at 2 p.m. eastern, Tuesday, March 14.
