TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 7, 2023) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Baseball and Softball.


Region 8 Coaches' Polls - March 6, 2023

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (February 27-March 5)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Player of the Week: Kendrey Maduro, Northwest Florida State
  • Region 8 Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Javi Marrero, Pensacola State
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Player of the Week: Amayia Hernandez, Daytona State
  • Region 8 Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week: Alina Varga, Indian River State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Player of the Week: Kohl Robertson, Pasco-Hernando State
  • Region 8 Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Sebastian Miller, Lake-Sumter State
  • Region 8 Division II Softball Player of the Week: Raquel Camuglia, Lake-Sumter State
  • Region 8 Division II Softball Pitcher of the Week: Darian Pippin, Lake-Sumter State

NOTE: DI Baseball/Softball and DII Softball recipients will be considered for NJCAA Player of the Week, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Sports Updates

  • DI Men's & Women's Basketball: Chipola College and Eastern Florida State College earned the No. 1 seeds in the FCSAA/NJCAA South Atlantic District Men's & Women's Basketball Tournaments, respectively, which begins Wednesday at Northwest Florida State College with women's quarterfinal action. The men's quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday with semifinals in both on Friday and the Championship Games on Saturday. All games will be streamed on Emerald Coast TV. The 2023 All-FCSAA/All-NJCAA Region 8 teams will be announced following the 6 p.m. games on Wednesday (women) and Thursday (men). During the tournament, the newest members of the FCSAA Men's Basketball Hall of Fame - coaches Steve DeMeo (Northwest Florida State College) and Jeremy Shulman (Eastern Florida State College) - will also be recognized.
  • DII Men's & Women's Basketball - Florida Gateway College rallied past Palm Beach State College to claim the DII Region 8 Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday. With the win, the Timberwolves earned the right to host this Saturday's DII NJCAA South Atlantic District B Championship Game vs. Pitt (N.C.) Community College at 2 p.m. The Palm Beach State College women, meanwhile, are headed to Raleigh, N.C., as the No. 6 seed in the DII NJCAA South Atlantic District Tournament, where it will play No. 3 seed Cape Fear (N.C.) Community College at 7 p.m. Thursday. 
  • Baseball: In the latest NJCAA Division I Baseball Poll, the College of Central Florida continued to sit atop the rankings while unbeaten Santa Fe College rose to No. 6. Red-hot Pensacola State College climbed to No. 11 while Gulf Coast State College is No. 15. Miami Dade College received votes.
  • Softball: In the latest NJCAA Division I Softball Poll, Northwest Florida State College and Florida SouthWestern State College remained Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while the College of Central Florida moved up one spot to No. 8. Seminole State College slipped three places to No. 14 and Indian River State College moved up two spots to No. 20. In the NJCAA Division II Softball Poll, Lake-Sumter State College earned a national ranking for the first time in school history, checking in at No. 19.
  • Swimming & Diving: Indian River State College proved, once again, it has no rival in the water! The Pioneers swept the NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, winning its 49th straight men's championship and 41st conseuctive women's title. Indian River State also swept the individual honors: Gina Miller, Scholarship Division Women's Swimmer of the Meet; Madison Price, Women's Diver of the Meet; William Beckstead-Holman, Scholarship Division Men's Swimmer of the Meet; and Sam Hlavacheck, Men's Diver of the Meet. The College of the Florida Keys, in just its second season of competition, garnered recognition as well - Graham Murza was named Non-Scholarship Division Men's Swimmer of the Meet and NJCAA Non-Scholarship Men's Athlete of the Year. 
  • Women's Golf: Eastern Florida State College finished third at the USCB Monument Golf Oldfield Invitational in Beaufort, S.C.
  • Men's Golf: Eastern Florida State College is currently in action at the Keiser Cup in West Palm Beach, Fla., and will wrap up play on Tuesday. 
  • Men's Tennis: Eastern Florida State College improved to 7-0 with wins over USC Sumter and ABAC
  • Women's Tennis: In the only Region 8 matchup of the week, Eastern Florida State College knocked off State College of Florida, 7-2.
  • Beach Volleyball: State College of Florida was the only member of the Region 8 quartet to see action last week, falling to Webber University and Florida Southern on Saturday. Looking ahead, the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Beach Volleyball Championships will take place March 31 and April 1 in Bradenton, Fla.
  • Outdoor Track & Field: Tallahassee Community College opened the outdoor portion of its track schedule by participating at the Florida Runners Club Invitational in Gainesville on Saturday.
