Hillsborough successfully defends FCSAA Women's Tennis Championship

TAMPA, Fla. - Hillsborough Community College won the 2024 FCSAA Women's Tennis Championship behind wins in six of a possible nine flights.

The Hawks finished with 14 points, outscoring runner-up St. Petersburg College, who had nine points, and third-place Eastern Florida State College's four points. 

Hillsborough won five of the six singles flights and one of three doubles flights. Both St. Petersburg and Eastern Florida State claimed a title in doubles. 

In what proved to be the match of the tournament, Hillsborough's Catherine Goldman won the #1 singles title over St. Petersburg's Isabela Mercante in three sets. 

Goldman, who beat Eastern Florida State's Elena Martinez Prado in Thursday's semifinal match (7-5, 6-2), took the first set from Mercante, 6-4. Mercante, the number one seed, evened the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set went to a tiebreaker, with 22 total points being scored. Up 11-10, Goldman finally put Mercante away to claim the title, a spot on the All-FCSAA team and FCSAA Women's Tennis Player of the Year honors. 

At #2 singles, St. Petersburg's Rima Yoshida, the tournament's No. 3 seed, advanced to the finals with an upset of No. 2 Emma Sanchez from Eastern Florida State (1-6, 6-0, 6-4). In the final, Hillsborough's Paula Cabrer Pericas withdrew due to injury, giving Yoshida the title and a spot on the All-FCSAA team. 

At #3 singles, Hillsborough's Rocio Martinez beat the No. 1 seed Alessia Ciampi from St. Petersburg in straight sets, winning both by identical 6-4 scores to earn a spot on the All-FCSAA team. 

Hillsborough's Yoana Dudova won at #4 singles, defeating Eastern Florida State's Maria Gento, 6-2 and 6-2. At #5 singles, Hillsborough's Sanne Schoorman knocked off St. Petersburg's Ai Katsura, 6-2 and 6-1. At #6 singles, Hillsborough's Adeola Greatorex was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over St. Petersburg's Kyoka Ueno. 

St. Petersburg picked up its second championship of the event at #1 doubles. The duo of Mercante and Yoshida beat Eastern Florida State's Emma Sanchez and Lucia Lucas, 7-5, 6-2. 

At #2 doubles, Hillsborough's Dudova and Schoorman beat Ciampi and Maria Moskaltsova from St. Petersburg, 6-3 and 6-3. 

Eastern Florida State picked up its lone win of the event at #3 doubles, with Sara Ladino and Elena Martinez Prado claiming a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Hillsborough's Greatorex and Goldman. 

Hillsborough's Sarah Lytle was named FCSAA Coach of the Year.
