Chipola claims women's FCSAA State Championship

NICEVILLE, Fla. (April 10, 2021) - Chipola College defeated Gulf Coast State College, 55-45, to claim the 2021 FCSAA State/NJCAA District Championship and an automatic berth to the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.

The second-seeded Indians trailed 12-10 after one quarter but took control, outscoring the Commodores 20-7 in the second. Chipola led by as many as 15 in the third quarter and was able to keep Gulf Coast State at bay over the final 10 minutes. 

Gulf Coast State, who entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, beat No. 4 Florida SouthWestern State College, in the quarterfinals then pulled the upset of the tournament, knocking off top-seed Northwest Florida State College, in the semifinal round. 

Tournament MVP DeMyla Brown led Chipola with 19 points.

Other members of the all-tournament team were: Sheslanie Laureano, Florida SouthWestern State College; Breanna Campbell, Indian River State College; Stephanie Torres, Eastern Florida State College; Masengo Mutanda, Northwest Florida State College; Last-Tear Poa, Northwest Florida State College; Isadora Sousa, Chipola College; Jordan McLaughlin, Chipola College; Shimei Muhammad, Chipola College; Nia Daniel, Gulf Coast State College; Sarah Matthews, Gulf Coast State College; and Cabria Lewis, Gulf Coast State College. 

Chipola head coach Greg Franklin was named the Roonie Scovel Tournament Coach of the Year.
