Gulf Coast State completes magical run to championship

NICEVILLE, Fla. (March 10, 2020) - Gulf Coast State College's magical run ended with a men's basketball state championship.

The Commodores knocked off Tallahassee Community College, 71-63, to win its first men's basketball state championship and clinch its first berth in the national tournament since 1972. 

Gulf Coast State beat three nationally-ranked teams at Raider Arena to claim the title - No. 1 Florida SouthWestern State College, No. 19 College of Central Florida and No. 12 Tallahassee. 

Leading the way for the Commodores was tournament MVP Cameron Holden. He was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Maurice Gordon, Jacolbey Owens and Trayvon Mayo, Tallahassee's Yahel Hill, Kailex Stephens and Tariq Silver, Central Florida's Walyn Napper and Angelo Johnson, Eastern Florida State College's Johnny Bernard, Florida SouthWestern's Keon Ellis and Broward College's Landon Kirkwood. 

Gulf Coast State will be joined in Hutchinson, Kan., for the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championships by Florida SouthWestern and Tallahassee. Games begin Monday, March 16 and continue through Saturday, March 21.
