
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - St. Johns River State College won its second straight FCSAA Division II Baseball Championship with an 11-8, come-from-behind victory over South Florida State College.
The Vikings move on to the NJCAA Division II South District Championship Series against Coastal Alabama Community College-North, the Champions of Region 22. The best-of-three series is hosted by Region 8 this year and will take place in Palatka, Fla., on the campus of St. Johns River State, May 10-12.
South Florida State forced Sunday's "if" game by staving off elimination twice on Saturday, including a 7-4 win over St. Johns River State. Hoping to ride the momentum for one more game, the Panthers jumped out a 3-0 lead through two innings on Sunday, highlighted by Vinny Mercado's two-run homer, and carried a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the sixth.
That's when St. Johns River State's high-powered offense found its groove. scoring four runs in both the sixth and seventh to seize an 11-5 lead.
South Florida State didn't quit, however, scoring three runs in the eighth.
