FSCJ's Gaviria, CF's Swygert grab Pitcher of the Week honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 18, 2022) - The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced its Player of the Week awards on Wednesday and Region 8 claimed two honors.

The College of Central Florida's Sam Swygert was named NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week while Florida State College at Jacksonville's Daniel Gaviria was tabbed NJCAA Division II Baseball Pitcher of the Week. 

Swygert, a freshman righty from Springfield, S.C., went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances, both coming during the FCSAA/NJCAA South Atlantic District Tournament. 

He was the winning pitcher of the Championship Game against Miami Dade College, tossing six scoreless innings in relief. 

Swygert totaled 7.1 innings in the tournament, all in relief, and allowed five hits, no runs and three walks while striking out nine. As a result, he was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Pitcher.

Gaviria, a sophomore lefty from Orlando, Fla., went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearance at the Division II South Atlantic District Championship Series against Catawba Valley (N.C.) Community College. 

He picked up the win in game one vs. CVCC with eight scoreless innings. He allowed six hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts. 

Swygert and Gaviria are the 23rd and 24th Region 8 Player of the Week recipients from Region 8 during the 2021-22 season.
