NJCAA Region 8 Baseball/Softball Notebook: April 26

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 26, 2016) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Coaches’ Polls for April 26 and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for baseball and softball for games played April 18-24.

This is the final poll for baseball. The next Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for baseball and softball will be released May 3.

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Player of the Week
Zach Diewert, Polk State'
Freshman – LF
Chamainus, BC, Canada           

  • Batted .467 (7-for-15) with four runs scored, one double, two home runs, seven RBIs and two stolen bases in four games during the voting period
  • Led Polk State to a 4-0 record and the Suncoast Conference Championship
  • Homered as part of a 3-for-5, 5-RBI day vs. South Florida State (4/18/16); was 2-for-3, scored two runs, homered and drove in two vs. South Florida State (4/22/16); added another multi-hit game vs. State College of Florida (4/23/16), going 2-for-4

Sophomore – RHP
Miami, Fla. 

  • 1-0, 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period
  • Threw a two-hit shutout in Broward’s 4-0 win over Miami Dade on April 19
  • Allowed four walks and struck out 10

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Player of the Week
Paige Johnson, Northwest Florida State
Freshman – 1B
Clarksville, Tenn. 

  • Batted .615 (8-for-13) with six runs scored, one double, four home runs and eight RBIs in four games during the voting period
  • Hit safely and scored a run in each game; also homered in all four games
  • Was 3-for-7 with two home runs and three RBIs in Panhandle Conference doubleheader vs. Gulf Coast State (April 19); was 5-for-6 with two homers and five RBI in doubleheader vs. NJCAA DII No. 1 LSU-Eunice

  • In 13 total innings, allowed eight hits, two runs (one earned) and no walks while striking out two
