NJCAA Region 8 Baseball/Softball Notebook: April 5

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 5, 2016) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball and Softball Coaches’ Polls for April 5 and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for games played March 28-April 3.

The next poll and Player and Pitcher of the week selections will be released April 12.

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Player of the Week
Nico Torino, Daytona State
Sophomore – SS
Ocala, Fla. 

  • Batted .588 (10-for-17) with two runs scored, two doubles, one home run (.882 slugging percentage) and eight RBIs
  • Led Daytona State to a perfect 4-0 record
  • Hit safely in all four games and had three straight three-hit games to start the week
  • Was 3-for-5 with three RBIs in consecutive games at Florida State College at Jacksonville and at Seminole State

  • Pitched 6.2 scoreless innings in win vs. Lake-Sumter State on April 1
  • Allowed only four hits and walked three while striking out 12

Lake Worth, Fla. 

  • Batted .471 (8-for-17) with six runs scored, one double, three home runs and 13 RBIs in six games during the voting period
  • Led Florida State College to five wins in six games last week
  • Hit safely in five of six games and had four multi-RBI games
  • Went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Daytona State; 3-for-5 with two home runs and eight RBIs in doubleheader sweep of Baton Rouge

  • Recorded four complete-game victories, including shutouts vs. Palm Beach State and Daytona State
  • Also picked up a win against Daytona State in completion of suspended game
  • In 28 total innings, allowed 16 hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out 20
