FCSAA Baseball/Softball Notebook: April 7

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 7, 2015) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its Baseball and Softball Coaches’ Polls and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for April 7.

The next poll will be released Tuesday, April 14.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Player of the Week
Cliff Bryant, Santa Fe
Sophomore – 1B
Trenton, Fla. 

Santa Fe College’s Cliff Bryant is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Player of the Week. Bryant, a sophomore from Trenton, Fla., batted .500 (6-for-12) with four runs scored, three doubles, one home run (1.000 slugging percentage) and 10 RBIs in four games during the voting period. Bryant hit safely in the final three games of the week, all against Florida State College at Jacksonville. In game one on April 1, he doubled and scored two runs. Two days later, he had two doubles and drove in four runs, then in game three he was a perfect 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBIs.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jonny Ortiz, Daytona State
Sophomore – LHP
Coral Springs, Fla. 

Daytona State College’s Jonny Ortiz is this week’s NJCAA Region8/FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Ortiz, a sophomore from Coral Springs, Fla., was 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA in two appearances during the voting period. He twirled a two-hit shutout and struck out ten in a 3-0 win over Florida State College at Jacksonville on March 30. Three days later, he picked up a no-decision vs. Seminole State despite pitching into the sixth. For the week, Ortiz totaled 14.2 innings and allowed only 11 hits and one walk while striking out 12.  

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Player of the Week
Mariah Wise, Central Florida
Freshman – OF
Bradenton, Fla. 

The College of Central Florida’s Mariah Wise is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Player of the Week. Wise, a freshman from Bradenton, Fla., batted .600 (9-for-15) with six runs scored, one triple, two RBIs and five stolen bases in five games during the voting period. She hit safely in four of the games, collecting multiple hits in each. She was a combined 4-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep of Florida State College at Jacksonville on March 31. Two days later against Santa Fe, she ended 2-for-2 in the completion of a suspended game then finished the scheduled doubleheader by going 3-for-4.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Pitcher of the Week
Holly McKinnon, Central Florida
Sophomore – RHP
Orlando, Fla. 

The College of Central Florida’s Holly McKinnon is this week’s NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Pitcher of the Week. McKinnon, a sophomore from Orlando, Fla., went 2-0 with one save and a 0.47 ERA in three appearances during the voting period. She factored into the decision in each of the three games she pitched in, beginning with a complete-game victory against Florida State College at Jacksonville on March 31. On April 2 against Santa Fe, she pitched the final inning to complete a previously suspended game and earn the save then tossed a two-hit shutout in the originally-scheduled game one. For the week, McKinnon totaled 15 innings in the circle and allowed only seven hits and two walks while striking out 15.
