TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 1, 2022) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and announced its Player of the Week Awards in Volleyball and Cross Country.

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (for events/matches October 24-30)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 DI Volleyball Player of the Week: Sofia Kamke, Eastern Florida State
  • Region 8 DI Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week: Barbara Koehler, Florida SouthWestern
  • Region 8 DI Volleyball Setter of the Week: Roberta Purashaj, Florida SouthWestern
  • Region 8 DII Volleyball Player of the Week: Hope Harrington, St. Johns River State
  • Region 8 DII Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week: Paige Patterson, Pensacola State
  • Region 8 DII Volleyball Setter of the Week: Julianne Lindsey, St. Johns River State
  • Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week: Sebastian Hernandez, Daytona State
  • Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week: Shannon Jones, Daytona State

All Player of the Week honorees will be considered for NJCAA Player of the Week honors, which will be announced Wednesday.

Sports Updates

  • Cross Country: The FCSAA/Region 8 Cross Country Championships were held at Tallahassee's Apalachee Regional Park last Friday and a record 19 teams and 142 combined runners participated in the Men's 8K and Women's 5K. Eastern Florida State College's men captured the Region 8 Division I team title while the Titans' Dayton Law was the top individual runner. Meanwhile, the Titans beat Seminole State College by one point to claim the women's championship, although the Raiders' Carly Holadia was the top individual performer. In the Division II standings, Daytona State claimed both individual titles with Sebastian Hernandez and Shannon Jones posting record times in the Men's 8K and Women's 5K, respectively. The Falcons won the FCSAA/Region 8 men's team title while Pasco-Hernando State College emerged as the top women's team. Up next is the NJCAA Cross Country Championships, back at the ARP on November 12, and the NJCAA Half Marathon, along Tallahassee's Miller Landing Road, on November 15.
  • Women's Soccer: Polk State College defeated Daytona State College, 1-0, to win the Region 8 Championship. The Eagles move on to the South Atlantic District Championship Match, where they will play Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist College, at 1 p.m., Saturday, November 5. Daytona State and defending national champion Eastern Florida State will await the at-large selections to the NJCAA Tournament.
  • Men's Soccer: Daytona State beat Eastern Florida State, 5-3 in penalty kicks, to win the Region 8 Championship. The teams played to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtime periods. With the win, the Falcons advance to the Southeast District Championship, where they will play at Richard Bland (Va.) College, in Petersburg, Va., at noon, Saturday, November 5. 
  • Women's Golf: Seminole State and Eastern Florida State hooked up on the links for a match play event on October 28 and the Raiders came away with a 5-2 win at Mayfair Country Club in Sanford. Daytona State, meanwhile, along with Eastern Florida State, participated in the Flagler Fall Slam, where the duo finished in third and tie for 11th, respectively. 
  • Volleyball: The brackets are set for the FCSAA/NJCAA District Division I and Division II tournaments, hosted by Eastern Florida State College and St. Johns River State College, respectively. In Division I, Florida SouthWestern State College is the top seed and carries a No. 1 NJCAA ranking into the tournament for a second straight year. In Division II, Pensacola State College earned the tournament's No. 1 seed.
