FCSAA announces finalists for athletic, academic awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 23, 2023) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has announced the finalists for its 2022-23 end-of-year awards. 

Nominees for Male and Female Athletes of the Year are comprised of each FCSAA Championship sport's Player of the Year recipient, as well as individuals submitted from other sports sanctioned by the FCSAA (golf, soccer, swimming & diving, track & field), provided the nominee was named NJCAA All-America.  

Likewise, all Championship sports have selected a Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which were announced Wednesday, and the recipients automatically qualify for the FCSAA award, however, student-athletes from other sports may also be nominated. Nominees must have accumulated 48 credit hours with a minimum 3.30 GPA and have completed at least three full-time terms, including at least one at a FCSAA institution. Citizenship, community service and athletic prowess may also be taken into consideration.  

Male and Female Academic Teams of the Year - for small (10 or fewer participants) and large (11+ participants) rosters will also be selected.  

All award winners will be announced June 27.


Male Athlete of the Year  

  • William Beckstead-Holman, Indian River State, swimming - NJCAA Male Swimmer of the Year, NJCAA Team Champion, 7X NJCAA Champion (4 individual, 3 relay), NJCAA record holder in 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, 100 IM, 800 free relay
  • Michael Forret, State College of Florida, FCSAA DI Baseball Pitcher of the Year - Third-team All-America, FCSAA All-Tournament Team, 2022-23 stats: 10-3, 3.34 ERA, 86.1 IP, 106 K
  • Sebastian Hernandez, Daytona State, FCSAA Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year - 23rd place in NJCAA 8K, 11th place in NJCAA Half Marathon, posted FCSAA Championships record time in 8K (25:34.5)
  • Kevin Karstetter, State College of Florida, FCSAA DI Baseball Player of the Year - First-team All-America, 2022-23 stats: .415 BA, 12 HR, 77 RBI, 69 R, 16 SB
  • Connor McBride, St. Johns River State, FCSAA DII Baseball Pitcher of the Year - Third-team All-America, FCSAA Champion, FCSAA All-Tournament Team, 2022-23 stats: 9-3, 3.64 ERA, 96.1 IP, 110 K

  • Gina Miller, Indian River State, swimming - NJCAA Betty Jo Graber Award recipient, NJCAA Female Swimmer of the Year, NJCAA Team Champion, 6X NJCAA Champion (3 individual, 3 relay), NJCAA record holder in 500 free and 1000 free
  • Belle Sardja, Florida SouthWestern, FCSAA DI Softball Pitcher of the Year - NJCAA Champion, NJCAA Pitcher of the Tournament, First-team All-America, 2022-23 stats: 25-2, 5 saves, 0.88 ERA, 175 IP, 121 K

  • Madison Tenore, Daytona State, golf - Honorable Mention All-America, finished in a tie for 16th at NJCAA Championships, ended the season ranked No. 9 by GolfStat
  • Lola Vidamour, Palm Beach State, FCSAA Beach Volleyball Player of the Year - NJCAA Champion, NJCAA Pair of the Tournament, First-team All-America (Pairs), 2022-23 stats: posted 18-3 record playing at the #1 Pair

  • Colton Berquist, Lake-Sumter State, cross country - Larry Monts Award winner
  • Cole Deptula, Santa Fe, basketball - Hal Chasey Award winner
  • Dalton Fleshood, Daytona State, soccer - earned his A.A. in May, graduating with honors and a 3.51 GPA; helped Daytona State to the Region 8 Championship in 2022, appearing in 18 matches and tallying one goal and three assists
  • Sam Hlavachek, Indian River State, diving - will graduate this month with A.S. degree, currently boasts a 3.94 GPA; 2-time NJCAA Diver of the Year, 2-time NJCAA Champion, 2-time NJCAA All-America; NJCAA record holder in 3m board
