NJCAA Region 8 Notebook: November 16

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (November 16, 2021) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and Player of the Week selections for men's and women's basketball.

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (for all games November 8-14)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Brody Boyer, Eastern Florida State
  • Region 8 Women's Basketball Player of the Week: Jordan McLaughlin, Chipola

All Player of the Week honorees will be considered for NJCAA Player of the Week honors, which will be announced Wednesday.

Fall Championship Events

  • Volleyball -
    • Division I: FCSAA State/NJCAA Southeast District A Champion Miami Dade College earned the No. 3 seed at the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championships in Hutchinson, Kan., and will open tourney play against Jefferson (Mo.) College (Thursday 10 a.m. eastern), who boasts a tie to Region 8 - its Director of Athletics is Bob Deutschman, who held the same position at Broward College and was CAA Chair from 2017-19. Southeast District B Champion Polk State College drew the No. 9 seed in the 16-team field and will play No. 8 seed Iowa Western Community College (Thursday, 2 p.m.) while top-ranked Florida SouthWestern State College snagged one of the two at-large berths and is seeded fourth. The Bucs will play No. 13 Monroe (N.Y.) College at 4 p.m. Thursday.
    • Division II: Lake-Sumter State College FCSAA State/NJCAA Gulf District Champion Lake-Sumter State College received the No. 11 seed in the 16-team field and will open play against Terra (Ohio) State Community College at 10 a.m. eastern on Thursday.
  • Men's Soccer - Pool play at the NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championships opened at Tyler (Texas) Junior College on Monday. No. 8 seed Daytona State College will play its first match at 11 a.m. eastern, Tuesday, November 16.
  • Women's Soccer - Pool play at the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships opened at Daytona State College on Monday. No. 3 seed Eastern Florida State College was upset by Rose (Okla.) State College, 1-0, in its first match. The Titans' national championship hopes are still alive, but they need help to advance out of pool play.
  • Cross Country - Region 8 posted its best day of results to date at Saturday's NJCAA Cross Country Championships in Richmond, Va. The Daytona State College men finished as national runners-up, behind All-America runners Andy Martinez, Sebastian Hernandez and Christian Ruocco, who placed fifth, seventh and twelfth, respectively. Tallahassee Community College's Leo Rutledge placed ninth to join the Daytona State trio as NJCAA All-America, which is awarded to the top 15 finishers. Pasco-Hernando State College's women finished eighth to lead a quintet of Region 8 schools in the top 20. Many of the teams are still in Richmond for Tuesday's NJCAA Half Marathon.
  • All NJCAA Championship events are available on a pay-per-view basis via the NJCAA Network.
