TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 22, 2022) - The Florida College System Activities Association has released its weekly coaches' polls and Player of the Week selections for baseball and softball.

Region 8 Player of the Week Awards (for games March 14-20)

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who received Player of the Week recognition:

  • Region 8 Baseball Player of the Week: Caleb Cali, Central Florida
  • Region 8 Baseball Pitcher of the Week: Carson Dorsey, Gulf Coast State
  • Region 8 Softball Player of the Week: Emily Greek, Gulf Coast State
  • Region 8 Softball Pitcher of the Week: GraceAnne Spears, Gulf Coast State 

All Player of the Week honorees will be considered for NJCAA Player of the Week honors, which will be announced Wednesday.

Winter Sports Championships Update

  • Northwest Florida State College won the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, its third in school history, defeating Salt Lake (Utah) Community College, 83-67, in the championship game. The Raiders, who entered the tournament as an at-large selection and seeded tenth, won five games in six days. 
    • Chipola College advanced to the National Semifinals.
    • Northwest Florida State's DeShawndre Washington was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player and Kam Woods received the Bud Obee Outstanding Small Player Award. The Raiders' Greg Heair was named Coach of the Tournament. 
    • Washington was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Tre Clark and Brennan Rigsby and Chipola's Achor Achor.
  • Eastern Florida State College was the last Region 8 team standing at the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championships. The Titans advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Jones (Miss.) College in overtime. Not including the 2020 tournament, which was cancelled due to the pandemic, this is the first time since 2014 the National Champion didn't come from Region 8.
    • Eastern Florida State's Rapuluchi Ngorka was named to the All-Tournament Team.
