Curry, Pierre nab NJCAA Player of the Week honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 2, 2021) - The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced its basketball Player of the Week awards on Wednesday.

Region 8 captured both Division I awards with Santa Fe College's Aleisha Curry being named NJCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week while Indian River State College's Bendji Pierre was named NJCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week.


NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week: Aleisha Curry, Santa Fe College

Curry, a sophomore center from Lehigh Acres, Fla., averaged 16.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.3 steals, and 3.0 blocks in three games. 

She shot 53.1 percent (17-of-32) from the field and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line while leading Santa Fe to a 3-0 week, all against Region 8 opponents.

Curry posted double-doubles in wins over Tallahassee Communit College (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Indian River State (21 points, 14 rebounds).

NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Bendji Pierre, Indian River State College

Photo courtesy of Indian River State College Pierre, a freshman forward from Irvington, N.J., averaged 19.7 points, 12.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks in three games. 

He shot 51.0 percent (25-of-49) from the field and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line while leading Indian River State to three wins at the Florida vs. Georgia Thanksgiving Classic, where he was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Pierre posted double-doubles in wins over Albany (Ga.) Technical College (21 points, 15 rebounds) and #17 South Georgia Technical College (23 points, 16 rebounds).

Both Curry and Pierre received Region 8 Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.
