
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 23, 2022) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has announced the finalists for its 2021-22 end-of-year awards.
Nominees for Male and Female Athletes of the Year are comprised of each FCSAA-sanctioned sport's Player of the Year recipient, as well as individuals submitted from non-FCSAA sanctioned sports (golf, soccer, swimming & diving, track & field), provided the nominee was named NJCAA All-America.
Likewise, all sanctioned sports have selected a Scholar-Athlete of the Year, which were announced Wednesday, and the recipients automatically qualify for the state award, however, student-athletes from non-sanctioned sports may also be nominated. Nominees must have accumulated 48 credit hours with a minimum 3.30 GPA and have completed at least three full-time terms, including at least one at a FCSAA institution. Citizenship, community service and athletic prowess are taken into consideration.
Male and Female Academic Teams of the Year - for small (10 or fewer participants) and large (11+ participants) rosters will also be selected.
All award winners will be announced Friday.
Male Athlete of the Year
- William Beckstead-Holmon, Indian River State, swimming – NJCAA Swimmer of the Year, 8X NJCAA Champion (4 individual, 4 relays) and 8X NJCAA All-America, set NJCAA records in 50 and 100 back and was member of NJCAA record-setting 800 free relay
- A.J. Cajuste, Indian River State, FCSAA Basketball Player of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America (19.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 7.1 apg, 49.4 FG%, 34.0 3FG%, 79.9 FT%)
- Caleb Cali, Central Florida, FCSAA Baseball Player of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America (.438 BA, 17 HR, 77 RBI)
- Ben Chestnutt, Central Florida, FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Year – NJCAA Third-team All-America (11-0, 3.90 ERA, 83 IP, 106 K)
- Andy Martinez, Daytona State, FCSAA Runner of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America, finished fifth at NJCAA DII Cross Country Championships, FCSAA Individual Champion
- Yutaro Tsukad, Daytona State, soccer – NJCAA First-team All-America, All-Region 8, holds six school records, placed sixth nationally in 2021 with 20 goals
Female Athlete of the Year
- Romina Cornelio, Miami Dade, FCSAA DI Volleyball Player of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America (3.97 K/S, 3.19 D/S), .316 hitting %
- Harleigh Bilz Crist, Daytona State, FCSAA Runner of the Year – finished 17th at NJCAA DII Cross Country Championships, was FCSAA Individual Champion after running the fastest 5K in race history (19:37.3), USTFCCCA DII Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year
- Baylee Haggard, Florida SouthWestern, FCSAA Softball Pitcher of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America (25-2, 1.40 ERA, 141.1 IP, 100 K)
- Georgia Hood, Pensacola State, FCSAA Softball Player of the Year – NJCAA Second-team All-America, two-way player as a hitter (.440 BA, 9 HR, 65 HR) and pitcher (11-3,1.66 ERA, 1 save)
- Dariana Luna, St. Johns River State, FCSAA DII Volleyball Player of the Year – NJCAA Second-team All-America (5.5 D/S)
- Naomi McKenzie, St. Petersburg, FCSAA Tennis Player of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America and Doubles NJCAA Champions, finished with No. 6 ITA individual ranking and No. 1 doubles ranking
- Gina Miller, Indian River State, swimming – NJCAA Swimmer of the Year, 6X NJCAA Champion (3 individual, 3 relays), set NJCAA records in the 500 and 1000 free
- Minori Nagano, Seminole State, golf – NJCAA Individual Champion for second straight year, NJCAA Golfer of the Tournament, NJCAA First-team All-America, had average score of 71.10, which would rank fifth among NCAA players
- Last-Tear Poa, Northwest Florida State, FCSAA Basketball Player of the Year – NJCAA First-team All-America (14.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.9 apg, 42.9 FG%, 33.0 3FG%, 89.7 FT%)
- Elena Diaz Trujillo, Daytona State, soccer – NJCAA Honorable Mention All-America (12 goals, 5 assists, 29 points, 2 game-winners), All-Region 8, DSC Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
- Luke Altmann, Indian River State, swimming – graduated Summa Cum Laude, with an emphasis in accounting; inducted into 2022 class of Distinguished Scholars; 8-time NJCAA All-America (2 individual, 6 relays)
- Bryce Bass, Tallahassee, cross country – Larry Monts Award winner
- Nick Calero, Central Florida, baseball – Bill Tuten Award winner
- Will Diaz, Daytona State, soccer – graduated with High Honors; Lemerand Leadership Award recipient; NJCAA Second-team All-America in Spring 2021
- Chris Peterson, St. Petersburg, basketball – Hal Chasey Award winner
Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year
- Raissa Bianco, Miami Dade, softball – Jean Williams Award winner
- Harleigh Bilz Crist, Daytona State, cross country – Larry Monts Award winner
- Lola Dragosavac, Indian River State, diving – graduated Summa Cum Laude, inducted into 2022 class of Distinguished Scholars, as well as the College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa; NJCAA runners-up in 1M and 3M diving; 4-time CSCCA All-America
- Erin Ellis, Lake-Sumter State, volleyball – Roberta Stokes Award winner
