FCSAA announces finalists for athletic, academic awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (June 28, 2021) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has announced the finalists for its 2020-21 end-of-the-year awards.

Nominees for Male and Female Athletes of the Year are comprised of each FCSAA-sanctioned sport's Player of the Year recipient, as well as any nominees submitted from non-FCSAA sanctioned sports such as swimming and diving.

Likewise, all sanctioned sports have selected a Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and the recipients automatically qualify for the state award, however, student-athletes from non-sanctioned sports may also be nominated. Nominees must have accumulated 48 credit hours with a minimum 3.30 GPA and have completed at least three full-time terms, including at least one at a FCSAA instituion. Citizenship, community service and athletic prowess are taken into consideration. 

Male and Female Academic Teams of the Year - for small (10 or fewer participants) and large (11+ participants) rosters will also be selected. 


Male Athlete of the Year 

  • Linton Brown, Indian River State College, basketball - NJCAA First-team All-America, FCSAA Player of the Year (18.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.4 apg, 51.4 FG%, 48.3 3FG%, 72.3 FT%)
  • Konnor Copeland, Pensacola State College, baseball - NJCAA Third-team All-America, FCSAA Pitcher of the Year (7-1, 1 save, 1.74 ERA, 81 K in 57.0 IP)
  • Andy Martinez, Daytona State College, cross country - NJCAA First-team All-America, finished 4th at NJCAA Championships, FCSAA Runner of the Year, Individual State Champion
  • Gabe Rincones, St. Petersburg College, baseball - NJCAA First-team All-America, FCSAA Player of the Year (.415 average, 6 HR, 43 RBI)
  • Aramis Rivera, Indian River State College, swimming & diving - 2021 NJCAA Male Swimmer of the Year, swept all three individual events at NJCAA Championships (100/200/400 IM) to claim All-America honors in each

Female Athlete of the Year 

  • Erika Asencio, Miami Dade College, volleyball - NJCAA First-team All-America, FCSAA Division I Player of the Year (4.4 k/s, 4.4 d/s)
  • Harleigh Bilz, Daytona State College, cross country - FCSAA Runner of the Year, Individual State Champion, finished 18th at NJCAA Championships
  • Valeriia Cherfus, St. Petersburg - FCSAA Player of the Year, Individual State Champion, advanced to semifinals at NJCAA Tournament
  • Odalya Cordova, College of Central Florida, softball - NJCAA First-team All-America, FCSAA Player of the Year (.480 average, 20 HR, 100 RBI)
  • Nia Daniel, Gulf Coast State College, basketball - NJCAA First-team All-America, FCSAA Player of the Year (23.0 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.5 apg)
  • Minori Nagano, Seminole State College, golf - NJCAA Individual Champion, NJCAA First-Team All-America, qualified for the U.S. Women's Open Championship
  • Alyssa O'Donnell, Florida SouthWestern State College, softball - NJCAA First-team All-America, FCSAA Pitcher of the Year (23-1, 1 save, 1.67 ERA, 118 K in 138.2 IP)
  • Victoria Ortiz, Indian River State College, swimming & diving - 2021 NJCAA Female Swimmer of the Year, won all of her individual events at NJCAA Championships (200/500/1000/1650 free) and was a member of winning 400/800 free relay teams, 6-time All-American
  • Ava Shmueli, Gulf Coast State College, volleyball - NJCAA Honorable Mention All-America, Sun-Lakes Conference (FCSAA Division II) Player of the Year (0.4 k/s, 3.5 d/s, 8.8 a/s)

  • Brody Boyer, Eastern Florida State College, basketball - Hal Chasey Scholar-Athlete Award winner

  • Angel Limardo, Daytona State College, soccer - non-sanctioned sports nominee
  • Spencer Rich, Daytona State College, baseball- Bill Tuten Scholar-Athlete Award winner
