Makoi, LaCalameto claim POTW honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 24, 2021) - The NJCAA has announced its weekly Player of the Week awards. 

Daytona State College's Jackson Makoi was named NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week and the College of Central Florida's Kyle LaCalameto was named NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Makoi, a sophomore guard from Melbourne, Australia, averaged 20.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists in four games. He led Daytona State to a 3-1 record last week, including a win over Polk State College in which he recorded a triple-double - 28 points, 16 rebounds and 14 assists. 

He shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field, 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three and 70.3 percent (26-of-37) from the free throw line. 

Makoi also recorded a double-double - 13 points and 10 assists - against Hillsborough Community College.

Against Florida State College at Jacksonville, he threw a one-hit shutout in the Patriots' 14-0, five-inning victory. He walked none and struck out 12.

LaCalameto was named NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.
