TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 7, 2019) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Coaches’ Poll for May 7 and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for baseball and softball games played April 29-May 5. 

This is the final baseball coaches’ poll of the season.

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Player of the Week
Jeissy De La Cruz, Broward
Fr. – 3B
Manhattan, N.Y. 

  • Batted .467 (7-for-15) with one run scored, one double, five RBI and one stolen base in four games during the voting period
  • Helped Broward to a postseason berth by beating Indian River State then taking a best-of-3 series against Eastern Florida State
  • His two-RBI hit in the top of the ninth gave Broward the 2-1 win over Indian River State to advance to the series against Eastern Florida State
  • Hit safely in all four games, including 2-for-4 with two RBI in the decisive victory over the Titans

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Carter Stewart, Eastern Florida State

Melbourne, Fla. 

  • 0-0, 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period
  • Got a no-decision in Eastern Florida State’s 8-4 loss to Broward in the Southern Conference Tournament
  • In six innings, he allowed just three hits, one run (unearned) and three walks while striking out 12

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Player of the Week
Devyn Howard, Central Florida
Fr. – 3B
Tarpon Springs, Fla. 

  • Batted .667 (6-for-9) with four runs scored, one double, one triple, two home runs and five RBI in three games during the voting period
  • Led Central Florida to its first-ever FCSAA State Championship, as well as the NJCAA District G title and automatic berth to St. George
  • Hit safely, scored and drove in a run in all three games, earning MVP honors
  • In the final two games against No. 3 Chipola and No. 1 Florida SouthWestern, she was a combined 4-for-6, homered in each game and drove in three runs against FSW in the district championship game

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Pitcher of the Week
Amy Woodham, Chipola
So. – RHP
Slocomb, Ala. 

  • 3-1, 1.91 ERA in four appearances – all against nationally-ranked teams – during the voting period
  • Helped Chipola battle through the loser’s bracket and capture the NJCAA District H Championship
  • Beat No. 19 Seminole State in an elimination game then went the distance in the Indians’ 2-1, 9-inning victory over No. 1 Florida SouthWestern to capture the district championship
  • For the week, she totaled 22 innings in the circle, allowing 13 hits and seven runs (six earned) with nine walks and 15 strikeouts
