Gulf Coast, NWF State claim hoops titles

OCALA, Fla. (March 9, 2019) - The FCSAA Basketball Tournament's run in Ocala ended with a couple of familiar champions.

For the fourth straight year, Gulf Coast State College won the women's championship, defeating Northwest Florida State College, 67-63. The Commodores' Lya Farcy was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player while Gulf Coast State's Roonie Scovel was named Tournament Coach of the Year. 

With the win, Gulf Coast State punched its ticket to the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship in Lubbock, Texas, where it received the No. 2 seed in the 24-team event. Northwest Florida State and Florida SouthWestern State College earned at-large bids to the event. 

Meanwhile, Northwest Florida State won the men's championship for the second consecutive season and fourth time in five years. The Raiders knocked off Eastern Florida State College, 67-58. 

Raider guard Javion Hamlet was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player while Northwest Florida State's Steve DeMeo was named Tournament Coach of the Year. 

Northwest Florida State earned Region 8's automatic berth to the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship and received the No. 1 seed in the 24-team field. Eastern Florida State and Florida SouthWestern State earned at-large bids to Hutch.
