Region 8 claims four Player of the Week awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (January 30, 2019) - The NJCAA announced its Player of the Week awards on Wednesday and included four recipients from Region 8.

The Region 8 honorees included Broward College's DeAndre Pinckney, the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week; Eastern Florida State College's Connor Brian, the NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week; and Chipola College's Eila Infante and Florida SouthWestern State College's Kelsi Collins, the NJCAA Division I Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. 

Pinckney, a freshman forward from Miami Gardens, Fla., averaged 29.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 0.7 steals and 1.7 blocks in three games during the voting period. He shot 63.2 percent (24-of-38) from the field and 83.0 percent (39-of-47) from the free throw line.

Pinckney led Broward to a 2-1 week in Southern Conference play and posted double-doubles in wins over ASA Miami (39 points, 13 rebounds) and Indian River State (28 points, 12 rebounds). 

Brian, a freshman right-hander from Coral Springs, Fla., recorded one save and a 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period. He picked up a four-inning save in the Titans' season-opener against South Florida State. In that game, he allowed only one hit and struck out 10. 

Infante, a sophomore utility player from Venezuela, batted .700 (7-for-10) with six runs scored, one double, three home runs, 13 RBIs and three stolen bases in four games during the voting period. She hit safely in each game, as the Indians opened the season with four consecutive victories in Texas. 

Infante homered and drove in at least three runs in three of the four games, including a six-RBI effort against Navarro. She was 2-for-4 and scored a run in a 4-2 win over No. 1 Temple. 

Collins, a sophomore right-hander from Clermont, Fla., went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances during the voting period. She picked up wins against Santa Fe and No. 12 Seminole State at the JUCO Kickoff Classic & Showcase. 

Collins struck out 10 in five innings against Santa Fe and finished with 15 Ks total in 10 innings of work for the week. She allowed a total of three hits and two runs (both unearned) and had zero walks.
