NJCAA Region 8 Baseball/Softball Notebook: February 5

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 5, 2019) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball and Softball Coaches’ Polls for February 5 and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for games played January 28-February 3. 

The next poll and player of the week selections will be released February 12.

Freshman – CF
Naples, Fla. 

  • Batted .667 (4-for-6) with four runs scored, two home runs and nine RBIs in four games during the voting period
  • Helped FSW to a 4-0 week, including a win vs. No. 2 Walters State and two over No.1 Chipola
  • In the Walters State win, he hit a 3-run homer with his team clinging to a 5-3 lead
  • In the second game vs. Chipola, his seventh-inning grand slam broke a 3-3 tie and was the difference in the 7-3 win

  • Arguelles faced only one batter over the minimum in a 1-0 win, seven-inning win vs. South Florida State – 7 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 10 K
  • Wilkinson walked two and struck out four in a 5-0, seven-inning win over Central Alabama – 7 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Simonelli walked one and struck out five in six no-hit innings of a 10-0, seven-inning win over Gulf Coast State

  • Batted .833 (10-for-12) with seven runs scored, two doubles, three triples and six RBIs in four games during the voting period
  • Hit safely, scored and drove in a run in all four games, helping the Commodores to three wins
  • Was 4-for-4, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, and drove in three runs vs. Coastal Alabama-South
  • Was a combined 5-for-6 in a doubleheader against Georgia Military College

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Pitcher of the Week
Shayne O’Connell, Pensacola State
Sophomore – RHP
Tallahassee, Fla. 

  • 2-0, 0.50 ERA in two appearances during the voting period
  • Picked up complete-game victories against Roane State and Bishop State
  • Tossed a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in 7-0 win over Bishop State
  • For the week, totaled 14 innings in the circle, allowing five hits, three runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out 22
