NJCAA Region 8 Baseball/Softball Notebook: April 24

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 24, 2018) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball and Softball Coaches' Polls for April 24 and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for games played April 16-22. 

This is the final softball poll for 2018. 

The next baseball poll and player of the week selections will be released May 1.

Jose Cadenas, Hillsborough
Freshman – OF
Tampa, Fla. 

  • Batted .556 (10-for-18) with eight runs scored, three doubles, seven RBI and four stolen bases in four games during the voting period
  • Had multiple hits, scored and drove in a run in each of the four games
  • Was 4-for-5, with four runs scored, two doubles and two RBI vs. St. Petersburg

Antonio Velez, Hillsborough
Sophomore – LHP
Brandon, Fla. 

  • 1-0, 0.00 ERA in one appearance during the voting period
  • Pitched complete-game, six-hit shutout vs. Polk State
  • Struck out nine and walked none

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Player of the Week
Cassidee McCullough, St. Petersburg
Freshman – SS
Tampa, Fla. 

  • Batted .563 (9-for-16) with six runs scored, one double, three RBI and one stolen base in four games during the voting period
  • Hit safely, including three multi-hit games, and scored in all four games – all wins for St. Petersburg, who won the Suncoast Conference Tournament and qualified for the FCSAA State Tournament
  • Went 3-for-5 and scored two runs vs. Polk State; was 3-for-4 and scored twice vs. Hillsborough

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Pitcher of the Week
Kiana East, Seminole State
Sophomore – RHP
Melbourne, Fla. 

  • 2-0 and 0.45 ERA in three appearances during the voting period
  • Pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief in game one of the Mid-Florida Conference Tournament Championship Series vs. Daytona State, a game the Raiders lost
  • With the season on the line, she picked up two complete-game victories vs. Daytona State on day two of the championship series to send the Raiders into the FCSAA Tournament
  • In 15.2 total innings, she allowed nine hits, one run (earned) and no walks while striking out one
