NJCAA Region 8 Baseball/Softball Notebook: April 18

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 18, 2017) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Baseball and Softball Coaches’ Polls for April 18 and Player and Pitcher of the Week selections for games played April 10-16. 

This week marks the final softball coaches’ poll for the 2017 season. The next baseball coaches’ poll and player of the week selections for both sports will be released April 25.

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Player of the Week
Reynaldo Rivera, Chipola
Sophomore – 1B
Toa Alta, P.R. 

  • Batted .867 (13-for-15) with nine runs scored, two doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in four games during the voting period
  • Led the Indians to a perfect 4-0 week as they wrapped up the Panhandle Conference Championship
  • Had multiple hits in each game, including four-hit games to bookend the week
  • Was 4-for-5 and scored three runs vs. Tallahassee; finished the week going 4-for-4 with four RBIs vs. Pensacola State
  • In between, had a 3-for-3, two-homer, four-RBI outing vs. Tallahassee

NJCAA Region 8 Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Pearson McMahon, St. Johns River State
Sophomore – RHP
Middleburg, Fla. 

  • 2-0, 1.50 ERA in two appearances during the voting period
  • Started and picked up the win in games vs. Seminole State and Daytona State, going six innings and recording double-digit strikeouts in each
  • Allowed four hits and struck out 11 vs. Seminole State; gave up three hits and struck out 10 vs. Daytona State
  • For the week, he totaled 12 innings and allowed seven hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out 21

Sophomore – 1B
Wesley Chapel, Fla. 

  • Batted .692 (9-for-13) with three runs scored, two doubles, one home runs and seven RBIs in four games during the voting period
  • Led the Saints to three wins in four Mid-Florida Conference games last week
  • Hit safely in all four games, including three multi-hit games (two three-hit games)
  • Was 3-for-3 in game one vs. St. Johns River State
  • Went a combined 5-for-6 with three runs scored, a home run and seven RBIs (five in game two) in a doubleheader vs. Lake-Sumter State

NJCAA Region 8 Softball Pitcher of the Week
Courtney Gettins, Florida SouthWestern
Sophomore – RHP
Hawkes Bay, New Zealand 

  • 3-0 with a 0.42 ERA in three appearances during the voting period
  • Helped lead the Purple & Aqua to a 4-0 record and a second straight Suncoast Conference Championship
  • Picked up the win in both games of a doubleheader vs. State College of Florida, including a three-hit complete game in game one
  • Tossed a three-hit shutout in game one vs. South Florida State
  • For the week, she totaled 16.2 innings in the circle and allowed eight hits, one earned run and six walks while striking out 16
