TOPEKA, Kan. (November 19, 2017) - The fall running season came to a close on Saturday with the NJCAA Half Marathon. The 13.1 mile race came exactly one week after the NJCAA helds its Division I Cross Country Championships event in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Cold temperatures were a theme for both events, whose field included teams from Region 8.
Pasco-Hernando State College was the only Region 8 participant in the half marathon, finishing in sixth place.
Quincy Mayer led the Bobcat runners with a time of 1:40:09.2 and a 32nd place finish. Other runners included Lauren Hale (1:43:41.8), Montana Gottman (1:43:57.7), Skylen Acuna (1:47:07.8) and Savanna Van Wachel (1:53:10.6).
In the NJCAA 5K, Pasco-Hernando State and South Florida State College, the top two teams in Region 8, competed alongside 40 other Division I programs. Pasco-Hernando State checked in 24th overall while South Florida State finished 40th.
Individually, Mayer was the top Region 8 runner, finishing 111th out of 309 runners and posting a time of 20:20.8. Other Bobcat runners included Kalyn Burbine (20:40.0), Acuna (21:04.7), Hale (21:05.2), Gottman (22:02.6) and Van Wechel (23:31.0).
Kamryn Folger was South Florida State's top runner, finishing in 22:35.8. Other Panther runners included Lexy Barraza (22:50.0), Illana Addison (22:55.7), Brenda Miramontes (23:34.0), Sarahi Rivera (24:22.2), Mariah Turgeon (24:38.8) and Contessa Egan (24:44.6).
With more growth on the horizon, the 2018 season promises to be even more exciting for Region 8. Florida Gateway College and Daytona State College will begin running women's cross country, bringing the total number of schools to seven while Daytona State will join Tallahassee Community College as men's squads participating in the sport.
