FSW's Alarcon, Miami Dade's Martinez earn Player of the Week honors

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A pair of FCSAA Volleyball standouts were recognized by the NJCAA on Wednesday.

Florida SouthWestern State College's Alondra Alarcon was named NJCAA Division I Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week while Miami Dade College's Mia Martinez was named NJCAA Division I Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. 

Alarcon, a sophomore outside hitter from Lima, Peru, averaged 4.9 kills and 3.7 digs over nine sets, helping the Bucs to a pair of wins against nationally-ranked opponents. 

In a five-set win at No. 14 Polk State College, she had 24 kills and 22 digs then posted 20 kills and 11 digs (also six blocks) against No. 17 Eastern Florida State College.

Alarcon also posted a .283 hitting percentage and averaged 0.2 assists and 0.8 blocks.

Later in the day on Wednesday, Alarcon was named National Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Martinez, a freshman defensive specialist from Catano, P.R., averaged 6.8 digs over eight sets. 

She posted a season-high 36 digs in a five-set match vs. No. 15 Daytona State College then recorded 18 more in a straight-set win at No. 14 Polk State.

On Tuesday, Alarcon and Martinez were named Region 8 Division I Player and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. This is the second time during the 2023 season that Region 8 has swept both Division I Player of the Week awards.
