Back-to-Back: FSW downs Miami Dade to repeat as FCSAA DI Champions

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida SouthWestern State College won its second straight FCSAA Division I Volleyball Championship on Saturday, knocking off Miami Dade College, 3-0. 

No. 1 Florida SouthWestern and No. 3 Miami Dade split two regular season meetings prior to Saturday's rubber match. Both teams will return to Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Saturday for Atlantic District Tournament play. 

FSW will host Spartanburg (S.C.) Methodist College at 12 p.m. then Miami Dade plays Monroe (N.Y.) College at 3 p.m. The winner of each match will claim an automatic berth to the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championships. 

The Bucs set the tone for the afternoon by scoring the first three points in the first set. The lead gradually swelled to as many as 13, at 19-6 and 20-7. By the time Miami Dade hit double-digits, it still trailed by 20-10 and a service error closed out the first set, 25-14. 

FSW drew first blood in set two and the teams alternated the first four points. At 2-2, the Bucs scored five unanswered points to take control and they never trailed en route to a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead. 

The Sharks opened the third-set scoring, their first lead of the afternoon and had a 9-6 advantage before FSW rattled off six unanswered points. Later, a 6-1 surge gave the Bucs a 21-13 lead that eventually became a 25-15 triumph and a 3-0 victory. 

The Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Roberta Purashaj, tallied 36 assists for FSW. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Alondra Alarcon, Victoria Zibecchi and Nina Boledovicova. 

Miami Dade was represented by Ana Tevdoradze, Mia Martinez and Luiza Da Cruz. 

The Bucs' Thais Baziquetto-Allen received the Mary Andrew Award, which is presented to the coach of the FCSAA Division I Champions.
