2021 Division I FCSAA All-State/NJCAA All-Region VIII Team
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 24, 2021) - The top NJCAA Division I Volleyball players in the state of Florida were recognized on Wednesday with the release of the Division I FCSAA All-State/NJCAA All-Region VIII team.
Leading the 12-person team was FCSAA Player of the Year Erika Asencio of undefeated and top-ranked Miami Dade. The team was made up of players from seven different FCSAA squads and featured three freshmen and nine sophomores.
Asencio, the 2021 Southern Conference Player of the Year, doubled up as the FCSAA Player of the Year after leading Miami Dade to yet another Southern Conference Championship and an undefeated regular season. She led the state with 4.65 kills per set during the regular season and currently ranks 4th nationally while her .357 hitting percentage is 5th highest of any player in the country this season with 200 or more kills. Joining Asencio on the All-State team was Sharks setter Camila De La Rosa, who led the state with 11.04 assists per set this season. De La Rosa quarterbacked Miami Dade to an NJCAA-best 14.05 kills per set this season and helped the Sharks to a .301 hitting percentage which is best in the state and ranks 3rd nationally.
Florida SouthWestern placed a state-high three players on the 2021 All-State squad, led by Suncoast Conference Player of the Year, Yasso Amin. Amin led the FCSAA during the regular season with a .408 hitting percentage, which is good for 4th nationally, while also pacing the state in aces per set with 0.72 and ranking third in blocks per set with 1.25. Her 303.5 points scored were second-most of any player in the FCSAA during the regular season. Joining Amin on the team were Bucs teammates Julia De Sa and Fiona Baker. De Sa ranked 7th in the state this season with 3.44 kills per set and hit .280 on the year, the third-best mark of any outside with 200 or more kills. She was twice named the FCSAA Player of the Week including in week seven when she put up back to back 20 kill efforts for FSW. Baker was one of three freshmen named to the All-State team after averaging 10.42 assists per set on the season, which was second best to De La Rosa in the state in 2021. She helped FSW to a .288 team hitting percentage, which ranked 2nd to only Miami Dade during the regular season.
Mid-Florida Conference Champions Santa Fe placed two players on the team including MFC Player of the Year Madison Sheffield. Sheffield averaged 3.64 kills per set on the season which ranked 3rd in the state and was one of just four players in the state to average 3 or more kills and 3 or more digs per set on the season. She had nine matches with 10 or more kills this season including a pair of 20 kill matches early in the year. Joining Sheffield from Santa Fe was the lone libero named to the team, Kariana Ayala. Ayala was an anchor on the backline for the Saints this season, averaging 5.92 digs per set, which ranked 2nd in the state and in the top 10 nationally. She recorded double-digit digs in all 16 matches she played in this season while topping the 25-dig mark on three occasions.
Mid-Florida runners-up Daytona State also netted a pair of All-State selections in freshmen Derionah Abner and Sarah Stratton. Abner averaged 3.52 kills per set this season for the Falcons, ranking 7th in the state, while her 0.70 blocks per set were the most of any FCSAA hitter in the top 10 in kills per set. She recorded double-digit kills in all but four matches for the Falcons and had seven double-doubles on the year. Stratton led the state in total blocks in 2021 with 99 and her 1.43 blocks per set were best in the FCSAA and rank 2nd nationally. She had 10 matches this season with 5 or more blocks including a pair of 10 block matches against Indian River and Polk State. Offensively, she averaged 2.01 kills per set for the Falcons and hit .315 on the year.
Hillsborough's reigning First-team All-American Isabel Martin made her second straight All-State Team. Despite battling through an injury much of the season, Martin ranked 4th in the state in both total kills (216) and kills per set (3.60). Martin had 12 or more kills in 10 of her 16 matches played this season including four 20+ kill efforts.
Indian River right side Mallory Roney represented the Pioneers on the squad. She ranked in the top 20 in the state in kills per set this season with 2.72 while leading the Pioneers to both a State Tournament berth and a spot in the NJCAA National Rankings. She had 10 matches with 10 or more kills this season and posted a pair of double-doubles.
Rounding out the squad was Palm Beach State sophomore Madison Barton, who ranked 2nd in the state during the regular season with 231 kills on the year. Barton had 13 matches with double-digit kills this season and posted a rare 20/20 match with 23 kills and 25 digs in a win over Eastern Florida midway through the year.
Eleven of the FCSAA's 12 All-State selections will be competing in postseason play beginning Thursday, March 25 at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ). Information about the tournament and FSCJ site can be found online.
