NJCAA Region 8 Volleyball Notebook: October 23

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 23, 2018) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Division I and Division II Volleyball Coaches' Polls for October 23 and Division I and Division II Player, Defensive Player and Setter of the Week for matches played October 15-21.

The next poll and individual weekly awards will be released October 30.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Division I Weekly Awards

Player of the Week: Kylee Whiteleather, St. Petersburg
So. – OH | Ft. Myers, Fla. 

  • In her only match of the week, she recorded 16 kills, two total blocks and 17 points in a four-set win over State College of Florida
  • Also recorded a .261 hitting percentage
  • With her team's starting setters and middle injured, Whiteleather stepped up and led St. Petersburg to a 3-1 win over State College of Florida to clinch the Suncoast Conference Championship

Defensive Player of the Week: Sydney Jaco, State College of Florida
Fr. – DS | Bradenton, Fla. 

  • Averaged 7.8 digs in nine sets over two matches during the voting period
  • Punched her 15th and 16th entries into the 25 Dig Club with 34 vs. Hillsborough and 36 vs. St. Petersburg

Setter of the Week: Maria Idjilov, Central Florida
Fr. – S | Chinsinau, Moldova 

  • In her only match of the week, she recorded 37 assists (12.3 aps) in Central Florida's straight-set win over Daytona State to clinch a berth in the Region 8 Tournament

Player of the Week: Hanna Foecker, St. Johns River State
So. – OH | Sudlohn, NRW 

  • Averaged 4.5 kills, 0.3 assists, 0.4 service aces, 3.9 digs, 0.4 total blocks and 5.1 points in eight sets over two matches during the voting period
  • Recorded double-doubles (kills/digs) in Sun-Lakes Conference victories over South Florida State and Florida Gateway
  • Had 19 kills and 13 digs vs. South Florida State; 17 kills and 18 digs vs. Florida Gateway

Defensive Player of the Week: Amanda Berecz, Lake-Sumter State

  • Averaged 3.7 digs in nine sets over two matches during the voting period
  • Posted double-digit digs in matches against Pasco-Hernando State (22) and Florida Gateway (11)

Setter of the Week: Gabriela Hernandez, Lake-Sumter State
So. – S | Kissimmee, Fla. 

  • Averaged 12.6 assists in nine sets over two matches during the voting period
  • Also tallied a total of six kills, three service aces, 21 digs and two total blocks in matches against Pasco-Hernando State and Florida Gateway
  • After recording 51 assists in a five-set loss to Pasco-Hernando State, she had a school-record 62 in a 3-1 win over Florida Gateway, a season-high in Region 8 (DI and DII) and the second-highest single match total nationally among DII
