NJCAA Region 8 Volleyball Notebook: October 3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (October 3, 2017) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) has released its NJCAA Region 8 Volleyball Coaches’ Poll for September 26 and Player, Defensive Player and Setter of the Week selections for matches played September 25-October 1. 

The next poll and individual weekly awards will be released October 10.

NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Player of the Week
Massiel Matos, Miami Dade
Sophomore – OH
Higuey, D.R. 

  • Averaged 3.8 kills, 3.0 digs, 1.5 service aces and 5.6 points per set (13 total sets) over the Shark’s five matches
  • Helped top-ranked Miami Dade keep its perfect record intact with a 5-0 week
  • Posted double-digit kills in three of five matches, including 18 in the Sharks’ straight sets win vs. No. 11 Central Florida
  • Posted a double-double vs. State College of Florida with 11 kills and 16 digs

  • Averaged 6.3 digs per set (14 total) over four total matches
  • With 88 total digs for the week, Velez continues to lead Region 8 in digs per set (6.6)
  • After tallying 14 digs in the first match of the week vs. Florida College, she had three straight matches with 20+ digs, including 29 vs. Florida State College to punch another entry in the 25-Dig Club

  • Recorded no fewer than 30 assists in any match and posted 38 assists four times in six matches
  • Double-doubles (assists/digs) in her final three matches of the week
