Miami Dade downs SCF for state volleyball championship

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (November 8, 2014) - Both Miami Dade College and State College of Florida knew it had already qualified for the NJCAA Tournament, but a state championship was still on the line.

In Saturday's championship match of the 2014 NJCAA District/FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament, FCSAA No. 1 Miami Dade swept No. 2 State College of Florida in three sets to claim the title. 

The Sharks took a hard-fought first set, 25-21, then won the second and third sets, 25-12 and 25-19, respectively.

Miami Dade, who swept its way through the Southern Conference season, improved to 27-3. Meanwhile, State College of Florida, who saw its 22-match winning streak come to an end, is now 27-5.

Both teams' season will continue at the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament in Casper, Wy., November 20-22.

Miami Dade's Eirini Chatziefstatiadou was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Katie Hogan, Silvia Galeano and Merrisa Murphy.

Miami Dade's Origines "Kiko" Benoit was named FCSAA Coach of the Year.

Other players selected to the FCSAA All-Tournament Team included: Rossanna Ramos, Polk State; Yamiana Ramos, State College of Florida; Ruth Harrington, Santa Fe; Julymar Otero, Central Florida; Marina Adami, Central Florida; Maja Ristic, State College of Florida; Lea Lieb, State College of Florida; and Shatorreia Edgecomb, State College of Florida.
