Hillsborough wins FCSAA Women's Tennis Championship

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (April 13, 2023) - Hillsborough Community College remained unbeaten en route to capturing the FCSAA Women's Tennis Championship.

A dominating first day on the courts at Sanlando Park was enough to give the Hawks the team championship and one of three automatic berths to the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships. Runner-up St. Petersburg College and third-place finisher Eastern Florida State College also qualified for the NJCAA Championships. 

In Thursday's matches to determine the FCSAA Individual and Doubles Champions, the Hawks went a perfect 9-for-9. 

Hillsborough's Arina Gamretkaia defeated St. Petersburg's Isabela Mercante, 6-0 and 6-3, to win the #1 singles championships and FCSAA Women's Tennis Player of the Year honors. 

In the #2 singles, the Hawks' Esmee Andresen was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Eastern Florida State's Simona Karlsson. 

Hillsborough's Ita Habekovic defeated St. Petersburg's Kanna Kobayakawa, 6-1 and 6-3, to win the #3 singles championship.

It the #4 singles, it was Hillsborough's Alicia Gomez, who came out on top, defeating St. Petersburg's Alessia Ciampi in three sets, 6-2, 2-6 6-2.

Camilla Mitolo won at #5 singles for Hillsborough, defeating Eastern Florida State's Helena Jokanovic, 6-1, 6-0.

At #6 singles, HCC's Paula Cabrer Pericas scored a 6-1, 6-0 win over St. Petersburg's Ai Katsura. 

In doubles action, Gamretkaia and Andresen won the #1 flight for Hillsborough, 6-2 and 6-4 over St. Petersburg's Mercante and Kyoka Ueno.  

At #2 doubles, Gomez and Yoana Dudova didn't drop a game, winning 6-0 and 6-0 against St. Petersburg's Ciampi and Kobayakawa. 

At #3 doubles, Cabrer Pericas and Rocio Martinez Azcarraga won 6-3 and 6-1 over St. Petersburg's Katsura and Rocio Brisa Zarate. 

By virtue of winning their matches, the six individual and three doubles winners automatically comprise the All-FCSAA team. 

Hillsborough's Sarah Lytle was named FCSAA Coach of the Year.
