Hillsborough wins women's tennis National Championship

TYLER, Texas (May 10, 2023) - Hillsborough Community College swept its five championship matches en route to the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Championship.

This is the second national championship in school history for the Hawks, who also won the title in 2008. They had finished runner-up to Tyler (Texas) Junior College in both 2021 and 2022. 

Heading into the final day of action, Hillsborough and Cowley (Kansas) College were tied atop the leaderboard with 41 points each. Cowley had representation in six of the nine championship matches, while Hillsborough had five opportunities to win a flight. 

Three of Hillsborough's five championship matches were against Cowley, providing a golden opportunity to grab the championship trophy. The Hawks came through, sweeping its five matches to finish with 46 points, three ahead of Cowley. 

Three Hawks claimed singles titles: #3 Ita Habekovic, #4 Alicia Gomez and #6 Paula Cabrer-Pericas, which also earned each NJCAA All-America honors. In doubles action, Esmee Andresen and Arina Gamretkaia won the #1 doubles flight while Yoana Dudova and Gomez won the #2 doubles flight, also earning All-America recognition.

Hillsborough's Sarah Lytle was named Coach of the Tournament. 

Four FCSAA schools qualified for the tournament - St. Petersburg College and Eastern Florida State College joined Hillsborough as automatic qualifiers while State College of Florida made the field as an at-large. 

St. Petersburg (30 points) finished fourth while State College of Florida (20 points) and Eastern Florida State (19.5 points) were ninth and tenth, respectively.
