Hillsborough claims state tennis title

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (April 17, 2021) - Hillsborough Community College won the FCSAA Women's Tennis State Championship on Saturday.

The Hawks, behind individual titles at Flights 3, 4, 5 and 6 and Doubles Flights 2 and 3, finished ahead of runners-up St. Petersburg College. State College of Florida finished third in the team scoring and Eastern Florida State College was fourth. 

By virtue of a top three finish, Hillsborough, St. Petersburg and State College of Florida automatically qualify for the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament. Eastern Florida State will have to wait on a potential at-large bid.

St. Petersburg's Valeriia Cherfus was the Flight 1 singles champion, defeating Hillsborough's Mbali Langa to claim FCSAA Player of the Year honors. 

Other individual champions were: Flight 2, Naomi McKenzie, St. Petersburg; Flight 3, Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya, Hillsborough; Flight 4, Ana Villalvazo, Hillsborough; Flight 5, Isadora Oliveira, Hillsborough; and Flight 6, Olivia Pezo, Hillsborough. 

Cherfus and McKenzie also teamed up to take the Flight 1 Doubles championship, defeating Langa and Zhadzinskaya from Hillsborough. The Hawks managed to claim the remaining two doubles championships behind victories from Tuells and Oliveira in Flight 2 and Pezo and Villalvazo in Flight 3.

Hillsborough's Sarah Summerfield was named FCSAA Coach of the Year.
