SCF's Maria Medina named NJCAA Tennis Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 15, 2016) - State College of Florida's Maria Medina was named NCJAA Division I Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Friday.

Medina, a freshman from Caracas, Venezuela, won the Flight 1 singles championship and was a member of the Flight 1 doubles championship team at the NJCAA Region 8 Women's Tennis Tournament last weekend. 

Medina lost only one set en route to the Flight 1 trophy, defeating Efrosina Kariqi (Florida State College at Jacksonville), 6-0, 2-6, 6-1; Noelia Acuna (Hillsborough Community College), 6-0, 6-2; and Macarena Olivares (ASA Miami), 7-5 and 7-5. 

As a result, she was named FCSAA All-State and received FCSAA Women's Tennis Player of the Year honors. 

She teamed up with Iulia Sergheeva to win the Flight 1 doubles championship.

Medina is the second player of the week recipient from Region 8, joining St. Petersburg College's Kokoro Chishaki.
