Polk State women's soccer impresses versus Tigers in home opener

LAKELAND, Fla.- The Polk State College women's soccer team looked impressive in their 2021 home opener, as the Eagles soared past the Edward Waters College Tigers 6-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

All in all, on the match, the Eagles dominated the shot sheet 29-6, including 17-3 on frame.

PSC struck first early in the 9th minute when freshman forward Raisa Lugo slotted one far post off excellent build up play from Jillian Johnson and Gabriela Vargas.

Johnson found pay dirt herself in the 22nd minute, as she brought the ball down the left wing, dribbled into the box, and buried the shot far post to put the Eagles ahead of the Tigers 2-0.

Polk State took a 2-0 advantage over Edward Waters into the locker room at the half.

"I am really proud of the girls," shared Polk State head coach Jess Belli. "I think we came out a little comfortable in the first half, but I thought they came out in the second half, made some adjustments, and closed out the match."

The Eagles came out with high energy in the second half, as Lugo notched her second tally of the contest in the 57th minute, finishing the cross from Claire Renard to put PSC up 3-0. Sophomore AD Troche tacked on another score for the Eagles in the 80th minute, driving a ball from Logan Fernandez into the back of the net.

"My teammates help me a lot. Coming into a program where all of us really connect translates onto the field," commented Lugo. "When I get up to the goal, I know they have my back which is the biggest thing for my confidence. All of us, the girls and coaches, are a family."

Jillian Johnson notched her second goal on the day in the 85th minute, beating the keeper with the ball from Vargas.

Lugo cemented her second hat trick of the season with an outstanding solo effort in the 88th minute that grew the Eagles' advantage to 6-0.

"Raisa brings a lot to our program," added Coach Belli. "I think her movement off the ball is a different level good and we are really excited about her and the future she has here at Polk and beyond that. This whole freshman class has really been bringing a lot to our team which excites me for where we are going this season."

The PSC pair of freshman goalkeepers Thaynara Soares and Krystal Cruz amassed three total saves in the combined clean sheet.
