MELBOURNE, Fla. (October 19, 2015) - Fives were wild for Eastern Florida’s women’s soccer team on Monday.

The Titans beat Broward College 5-0 at the Titan Soccer Complex on the Melbourne Campus to win their fifth consecutive Florida College System Activities Association/NJCAA Region 8 championship to advance to the postseason for the fifth straight year.

The shutout was the fifth for Eastern Florida. It was shared by goalkeepers Steff Berreras and Asmara Holmes.

The national No. 1-ranked Titans improved to 11-0 and 4-0 in the FCSAA/Region 8. Broward fell to 4-3-1.

Eastern Florida, Broward and Polk State College play each other three times each to determine the one team that advances to the postseason. Eastern Florida earlier beat Broward 7-0 and Polk 3-1 and 7-1.

Sophomore Nicole Broderick set the tone early for the Titans, scoring from 30 yards out one minute and 49 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Eastern Florida lead.

The assist went to classmate Briana Camargo for her 17th of the season, breaking the school single-season mark set in 2014 by her twin sister Abbie.

Eastern Florida led 2-0 on Briana Camargo’s goal from long range with 19 minutes and 30 seconds to play in the first half.

Abbie Camargo made it 3-0 from long range with 34:41 to go. Broderick bulled her way through the Broward defense to notch her second score, making it 4-0 with 30:19 to pay.

Freshman Julia Hernandez closed the scoring for the 5-0 final margin.

“I just wanted to score the first one to get it over with for my team, to let my team know what time it is, they should get up and start working harder for each other,” Broderick said.

“By me scoring that first goal I thought it would change everything but I think it really didn’t because we kind of slowed down a little bit.

“Fortunately we got five goals tonight. It was two pretty good goals and I grateful to have them,” she added about her effort.

Titans head coach Jeff Carr took the victory in stride.

“That’s nice,” he said of the championship. “But we’re not satisfied. We want to go undefeated this year, I mean undefeated period.

“Still lots to work on. We were a little sluggish tonight. I don’t think we came to play. It was kind of obvious. Fortunately Nicole scored a goal quick and then we got another one. It the second half we kind of took it to them a lot more.

“They’ve worked hard this year. The chemistry’s amazing on this team. They’re wonderful young ladies. Hopefully we’re still playing on Nov. 21 (the date of the NJCAA Women’s Division I National Championship on the Melbourne Campus).

As for Broderick’s efforts: “She’s gotten fit and she’s buying into the system," Carr said. "She’s bought into playing the wing. She’s really been playing hard and being unselfish.”

Eastern Florida concludes the regular season by hosting Polk on Oct. 24 and visiting Broward on Oct. 30 before traveling to Mississippi the weekend of Nov. 6 for the District H title game that sends its winner to the national tournament.
