BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (November 3, 2015) - Eastern Florida freshman women’s soccer midfielder Paula Astiazaran is the 2015 Florida College System Activities Association/NJCAA Region 8 Most Valuable Player.

Also, Titans head coach Jeff Carr is the FCSAA/Region 8 Coach of the Year for the fifth straight time.

Titans named to the FCSAA/Region 8 first team were freshman forward Julia Hernandez, sophomore midfielders Abbie and Briana Camargo, sophomore defender Haley Cook and freshman goalkeeper Steff Barreras.

Astiazaran, a freshman midfielder from San Sebastian, Spain smashed the school single-season goal scoring record of 13, finishing the regular season with 23. She also recorded 18 assists. Her season total of 64 points – two for a goal, one for an assist – rank her fourth in the nation.

Hernandez, a freshman forward from Madrid, Spain scored 20 goals and recorded 11 assists for the season for a team second-highest 51 points, ranking her 15th nationally.

Abbie Camargo scored eight goals and recorded 17 assists, surpassing her school record of 16 assists set last season. Her twin sister Briana scored nine goals and set the new assist record with 21, ranking her fourth nationally.

Cook was a stalwart on the backline that allowed only nine goals. Cook started all 13 games this season and played in all 16 in 2014.

Barreras allowed seven goals in 856 minutes in 13 games for a 0.62 goals against average. She made 27 saves.

Titans named to the second team were freshman midfielder Jay Bales and sophomore defender Arnela Cordic.

Eastern Florida, ranked No. 1 nationally, finished the regular season at 13-0 and plays in the NJCAA District H title game.

“Naturally we are honored to have seven of our players recognized for their efforts and achievements,” Carr said. “It’s testament to our concept of playing as a team. Obviously Paula and Julia had great seasons as freshmen and Abbie and Bri were equally as productive and effective scoring goals and getting assists as sophomore co-captains.

“But that Haley and Steff were recognized is a testament to our defense as it is for Arnela to be named to the second team along with Jay who handled herself and the demands of her position well as a freshmen.”

Also honored as first-team selections were Sarah McKinney, Christina Gutierrez and Kara Quintanilla from Polk State College and Mason Hill, Jess Battle and Emma Stenberg from Broward College.

Other second-team honorees were Leah Rapuano and Liberty Bott of Broward and Kelsey Lewis and Brooke McKillen of Polk.
