HIALEAH, FL – G'Torria Swinton recorded her fifth double-double of the season Tuesday, totaling 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Ta'Kyla Austin scored a game-high 17 points to lead ASA Miami women's basketball team to a 63-33 victory over visiting Onondaga Community College at The Dent.
In what is the Lady Silver Storm's most successful season in program history, the team set another handful of records Tuesday.
With the win over Onondaga, ASA's women have won consecutive games for the first time in program history – ending the 2018 year with a December 19 win over Baltimore City Community College and opening 2019 with the win over the Lazers. The team also extended its record for total wins in a season – which grows with every Silver Storm victory this year.
Swinton's double-double also extends her personal program record for double-doubles in a season.
ASA Miami head coach Kevin Johnson said that while he is happy with his team improving to 6-9 on the season with the win Tuesday, he still wanted to see more from his team.
"I feel like we didn't do a good job of executing tonight," said Johnson, who's mantra all season has been to change the culture of the women's basketball program. "I'm always happy to get a win, but I felt that we had some lapses in terms of being in the right spots and getting the ball in the right spots at times tonight. We're getting ready to go into the most important part of our season and we need to make sure that we executing our plays at a high level."
From the outside looking in, it looked as though ASA was executing just fine early Tuesday. The Lady Silver Storm jumped out to a 17-6 lead midway through the first quarter, led 21-9 at the end of the first, then outscored the Lazers 15-7 in the second quarter to take a 36-16 lead into halftime.
ASA built its early lead because of Austin hot shooting. The transfer guard knocked down seven shots – including three three-pointers – in the first 20 minutes and ended up outscoring Onondaga by herself 17-16. While Austin cooled in the second half, that's when Swinton made her double-double push. Swinton scored eight points and grabbed eight boards in the third quarter alone as the Silver Storm's lead continued to balloon.
ASA Miami freshman guard Amiyah Harley added 12 points off the bench, sophomore Mackenzie Sadaka did a bit of everything – scoring six points, grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out two assists, and nabbing two steals.
The Silver Storm had a deeper bench Tuesday as sophomore guard Megan Delgado made her season debut against Onondaga. Delgado missed the first half of the season dealing with a foot injury and showed the rust of not playing in the first 14 games in her 14 minutes off the bench. The South Miami High School alum finished with three points on 1-for-7 shooting with three rebounds and two assists while being saddled with four fouls.
"It was good to have Megan back tonight. Just having an additional player on the bench is big for us. Now I just have to get her back in shape," Johnson said.
Up Next: ASA Miami will have a short turnaround, having to travel to conference rival Broward College Wednesday night for a 5:30 p.m. showdown as a part of a women's/men's doubleheader.
