Gulf Coast State knocks off Chipola for women's title

OCALA, Fla. (March 11, 2017) - Gulf Coast State College won its second straight state championship with a win over Chipola College.

The Lady Commodores knocked off the Lady Indians, 80-72, to win the FCSAA State/NJCAA District Basketball Tournament. 

With the win, Gulf Coast State earned Region 8's automatic bid to the NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship in Lubbock, Texas, March 20-25. 

Gulf Coast State beat the College of Central Florida (90-51) and Tallahassee Community College (99-69) prior to Saturday's championship game victory. 

Sophomore guard Taylor Emery was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Roonie Scovel was named FCSAA Coach of the Year. 

Maria Castro, Shayla Bennett and LaSonja Edwards were also named to the all-tournament team. 

Raven Northcross-Baker, Barbara Johnson and Danielle Garven represented Chipola on the all-tournament team. 

Despite the loss, Chipola will join Gulf Coast State in Lubbock after receiving one of eight at-large bids to the national tournament. Tallahassee also received an at-large bid and will make its first national tournament appearance since 2001.
