Gulf Coast State's Roonie Scovel wins 500th career game

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (January 21, 2016) - On Tuesday evening, Gulf Coast State College head women's basketball coach picked up career win No. 500 when the Lady Commodores defeated Tallahassee Community College, 64-61.

Scovel and assistant coach Grover Hicks have built one of the nation's top women's basketball programs during their 18-year stint at Gulf Coast State. 

With Tuesday night's win, Scovel's career record with the Lady Commodores is now 500-70 (winning percentage of .877).

"I want to thank Coach Scovel and Coach Hicks for their loyalty and dedication to Gulf Coast State College, our community and most importantly for changing the lives of countless student-athletes during the past eighteen years," said athletic director Gregg Wolfe.

Scovel's career highlights include:

  • Three NJCAA championships (2003, 2008, 2010)
  • Eight FCSAA State Championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2010)
  • 13 Panhandle Conference Championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)
  • 17 NJCAA All-Americans

There will be a recognition presentation center court immediately following the women's game on Saturday, January 23 vs. Chipola College.
