Martinez, Bailey take NJCAA Player of the Week honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 19, 2020) - Region 8 took home a pair of NJCAA Player of the Week awards on Wednesday.

Northwest Florida State College's Lele Martinez was named NJCAA Division I Softball Player of the Week while Chipola College's Brianna Bailey was named NJCAA Division I Softball Pitcher of the Week.

Martinez, a sophomore shortstop from Ponce, P.R., batted .500 (10-for-20) with 11 runs scored, four doubles, one triple, two home runs, 11 RBI and three stolen bases in seven games during the voting period. 

She helped the Raiders to six wins, including two over nationally-ranked opponents.

Martinez had five multi-hit games and four multi-RBI games last week. She was 4-for-5 with five runs scored and four RBI in a doubleheader sweep of John A. Logan and 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI vs. No. 9 Wallace-Dothan.

Bailey, a sophomore righty from Wewahitchka, Fla., was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in one appearances during the voting period. 

In her only outing last week, she tossed a five-inning, one-hit shutout against Abraham Baldwin with no walks and 13 strikeouts. 

Martinez and Bailey are the second and third player of the week winners from Region 8 this season. The College of Central Florida's Devyn Howard received the honor on February 12. Both players were recognized as the NJCAA Region 8 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday.
