Daytona State's Martinez named NJCAA Runner of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 20, 2021) - Daytona State College's Andy Martinez was named the NJCAA Division II Men's Runner of the Week on Wednesday.

Martinez, a sophomore from Melbourne, Fla., was the top two-year runner at the October 15 FSU Invitational, held at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. 

The event, which also served as the NCAA pre-nationals, drew teams from coast to coast, as well as two-year participants from Daytona State, Tallahassee Community College and Lake-Sumter State College. 

Martinez competed in the open division race and finished 31st overall, posting an 8K time of 24:59.4

Led by Martinez, Daytona State is currently ranked No. 3 in the latest NJCAA Division II Cross Country rankings. Lake-Sumter State is No. 14 while Tallahassee checked in at No. 19.

In the women's rankings, Daytona State leads a quintet of Region 8 schools in the poll at No. 9. Pasco-Hernando State College is next at No. 14 followed by Florida Gateway College (No. 18), Lake-Sumter State (No. 22) and South Florida State College (No. 23).
