BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (May 12, 2015) - Eastern Florida State College golfer Kerry Sweeney’s standout season continued on Monday as he was awarded first-team PING All-America status and won the Phil Mickelson Award Presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf.

The honors were presented at the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship pre-tournament banquet in Newton, Kansas.

The Titans, ranked No. 1 nationally by Golfstat.com and No. 2 by the NJCAA, on Tuesday begin play in their 13th consecutive national tournament under head coach Jamie Howell.

Sweeney, from Melbourne, Fla., and Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, earlier this season was named to the NJCAA District 4 All-District team along with teammate and classmate Mickey DeMorat.

Sweeney went on to win the District 4 individual title to go along with earlier victories at the Barry University Buccaneer Invitational – where the Titans competed against 17 NCAA Division II teams – and the Darton Spring Invitational.

Previous Titans who received PING All-America honors under Howell were: Chris Goldan, 2008; Spencer Baldwin, 2010; Billy Anderson, 2011, 2012. Sweeney is the first Titan to win the Mickelson award.

Sweeney also joins soccer players and fellow first-team All-Americas freshman Abbie Camargo and sophomore Kyle Carr as Eastern Florida Student-Athletes of the Year.
