FCSAA announces men’s All-State team; Cajuste voted Player of the Year

NICEVILLE, Fla. (March 3, 2022) – The Florida College System Activities Association announced its All-State/NJCAA All-Region 8 men's basketball team on Wednesday evening.

Headlining the 12-member team is FCSAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year, A.J. Cajuste of Indian River State College

Cajuste, a sophomore guard from Boca Raton, Fla., follows 2021 recipient Linton Brown to give Indian River State back-to-back FCSAA Player of the Year winners. 

The FCSAA Player of the Year is voted on by members of the FCSAA Men's Basketball Committee. 

Cajuste, previously voted Southern Conference Player of the Year, led Indian River State to one of its best regular seasons in school history: a 26-3 record and the Southern Conference Championship, a No. 2 NJCAA ranking and a No. 1 Region 8 ranking. Through regular season player, Cajuste was second in Region 8 in scoring (19.0 ppg) and led the region in assists (6.9 apg) while also averaging 5.1 rebounds. He shot 49.7 percent from the field (35.6 percent from three) and 83.5 percent from the free throw line. Cajuste was a three-time Region 8 Player of the Week in 2021-22.

Hasan Abdul-Hakim, Santa Fe
Freshman | Guard | Toronto, ONT, Canada

Averaged 13.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists…shot 43.8 percent from the field and 67.3 percent from the free throw line…top ten in the region in both steals (53, 8th) and blocks (29, 8th)…scored 27 points on two occasions, including a Saints' victory at Eastern Florida State…a two-time Region 8 Player of the Week.

Tre Clark, Northwest Florida State
Sophomore | Guard | Covington, Ga.

Averaged 12.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists…shot 46.8 percent from the field and 74.2 percent from the free throw line…ranked fifth in Region 8 in steals…earned one Region 8 Player of the Week award this season…had a stretch where he reached double-figure scoring in 13 out of 15 games, punctuated by a 25-point outing against Gulf Coast State.

Bradley Douglas, Santa Fe
Freshman | Guard | Eustis, Fla.

The Central Conference Player of the Year…averaged 15.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists…shot 45.6 percent from the field and 67.1 percent from the free throw line…tops in the region at 32.8 minutes per game…his 179 field goals ranks sixth in the region…was also fourth in assists (158), seventh in points (465) and tenth in steals (50)…picked up on Region 8 Player of the Week award.

Faizon Fields, Chipola
Freshman | Forward | Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Leads Region 8 and ranks second nationally in field goal percentage (70.6)…also averaged 9.5 points and 8.4 rebounds, which ranked sixth in Region 8 while his 234 total rebounds was the fourth-best number in the region…the region's No. 2 shot blocker (46)…six double-doubles, including two that featured 20-rebounds (16 points, 20 rebounds vs. Georgia Highlands; 12 points, 20 rebounds vs. Gulf Coast State).

Tommy Lewis, Polk State
Sophomore | Guard | Gifford, Fla.

Averaged 13.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists while leading Region 8 with 77 steals (2.8 spg)…also shot 46.4 percent from the field and 74.7 percent from the free throw line…had seven games of four steals or more…scored season-high of 24 points against State College of Florida and Daytona State.

Japhet Medor, Hillsborough
Sophomore | Guard | Lake Worth, Fla.

Region 8's leading scorer at 22.9 points per game…scored 30+ four times, including a season-high 40 against Florida SouthWestern…second in Region 8 in assists (6.5 apg) and led Region 8 in both free throws made (163) and attempts (220).

Bryant Selebangue, Florida SouthWestern
Freshman | Forward | Lasalle, QC, Canada

Region 8's leading rebounder, both in total rebounds (295) and per game average (10.5)…sixth in the region with 32 blocks…shot a robust 68.9 percent from the field, second-best in the region…also averaged 13.2 points per game…has recorded 16 double-doubles this season, including six during Southern Conference play…was the only player in Region 8 to average a double-double…twice recognized as Region 8 Player of the Week.

Nae'Qwan Tomlin, Chipola
Sophomore | Guard | New York, N.Y.

Averaged 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists…shot 51.5 percent from the field and 74.2 percent from the free throw line…recorded a pair of double-doubles…four 20+ point games offensively, including a season-high 22 against both Pensacola State and Gulf Coast State.

Deshawndre Washington, Northwest Florida State
Sophomore | Guard | Chicago, Ill.

The Panhandle Conference Player of the Year…second in the region in total rebounds (271) and rebounds per game (9.3)…posted eight double-doubles this season…also averaged 11.2 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 72.0 percent from the free throw line…scored in double-figures in each of his final 10 conference games, five of which were double-doubles, including an 11-point, 17-rebound night vs. Gulf Coast State.

James "Pop" Weathers, State College of Florida
Freshman | Guard | Baton Rouge, La.

The third-leading scorer in Region 8 (18.2 ppg)…ranked third in field goals (193) and free throws (131), was ninth in total rebounds (179), second in total steals (64) and sixth in total assists (148)…reached double-figure scoring in all but two games…had five games of 25+ points, including 29 vs. Hillsborough and Indian River State…logged a triple-double (13 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists) vs. Daytona State and posted three additional double-doubles.

Freddie Word, Polk State
Sophomore | Guard | Lehigh Acres, Fla.

Averaged 13.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists…shot 50.5 percent from the field and 65.1 percent from the free throw line…increased his scoring to 14.2 points per game in Central Conference play, buoyed by nine straight double-digit outings, including 24 vs. Eastern Florida State and 26 vs. Daytona State.

The FCSAA All-State/NJCAA All-Region 8 women's team will be announced on Thursday evening.
