FSW's Williams, CF's Schuelke grab NJCAA POTW honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 1, 2023) - The NJCAA announced its first Baseball Player & Pitcher of the Week awards on Wednesday and Region 8 collected both Division I awards. 

Florida SouthWestern State College's Derek Williams was named NJCAA Player of the Week while the College of Central Florida's Cam Schuelke was named NJCAA Pitcher of the Week.

Williams, a sophomore first baseman from St. Louis, Mo., batted .625 (10-for-16) with seven runs scored, five doubles, two home runs (1.313 slugging percentage) and 14 RBI in four games.

Williams hit safely, scored and drove in at least two runs in each of the Bucs' games last week. He had a pair of 5-RBI games, including against St. Petersburg College, when he was 3-for-4 with a home run. He also went 3-for-4 with two doubles vs. Polk State College.

Schuelke, a sophomore from Dorr, Mich., earned the honor in a relief role for the Patriots. 

The right-hander was 1-0 with two saves and a 0.00 ERA in three appearances. 

Schuelke recorded a pair of six-out saves vs. State College of Florida and ABAC, then earned the win vs. South Georgia State College with two innings of relief.

For the week, he totaled six innings of work, allowing one hit, no runs and one walk with 12 strikeouts.

Williams and Schuelke were named Region 8 DI Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Tuesday.
