Saints' Allen, Johnson take NJCAA POTW honors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 26, 2016) - Santa Fe College's Matt Allen and Trent Johnson took home the final NJCAA Division I Baseball Player of the Week honors for 2016.

Allen was named NJCAA Division I Baseball Player of the Week while his teammate Johnson was tabbed NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

Both players received NJCAA Region 8 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Allen, a sophomore catcher from Jacksonville, Fla., was named Most Valuable Player at the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA State Baseball Tournament after batting .438 (7-for-16) with five runs scored, one double, three home runs and eight RBIs in four games during the voting period. He batted .368 overall for the tournament.

Allen hit safely in the final four games for the Region 8 No. 1 Saints, including a combined 6-for-12 in three game vs. No. 2 Chipola. He doubled and homered as part of a 2-for-4, four-RBI effort in teams’ first meeting and homered twice and drove in three runs in Santa Fe’s 6-4 win in the championship game.

Johnson, a right-handed pitcher from Williston, Fla., was named Most Outstanding Pitcher at the NJCAA Gulf District/FCSAA State Baseball Tournament. He was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in one appearance during the voting period and finished 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA overall in two appearances for the tournament. 

Johnson allowed four hits and an unearned run over eight innings in Santa Fe’s opening 6-1 win against Eastern Florida State. He went eight innings and picked up the win in the championship game over Chipola.

In 16 total innings at the tournament, allowed 12 hits and two walks while striking out 14.
